Come on you Irons!
West Ham United 1-0 Tottehnham Hotspur, Wednesday 2 March 2016
While I would consider Millwall our real traditional rivals, Spurs nowadays aren't to far behind. The context of this match, as with the game recently at the London Stadium meant that there was significantly more than a London Derby at stake. Spurs were riding high challenging for the title and we were on the home stretch of leaving our famous home and Spurs being one of our last London derbies at the Boleyn Ground meant that losing to a fierce rival was not an option from the perspective of the supporters at least.
The night was ours, after a spectacular goal by Antonio, which wasn't so much spectacular on the eye, more spectacular in terms of importance and I personally felt a sign of relief not having to put up with Spurs supporters taking the piss at being one of the last winners at Upton Park. A such, bragging rights were ours once again, because as everyone knows, when West Ham play Spurs when they challenging for something, they tend to choke.
Newcastle United 3-1 West Ham United, 23.09.2007 - More for the journey than the poor result. 7hr hour coach there and 7hr coach back to Upton Park. From memory Viduka put us to the sword and the highlight was stretching my legs for 90 minutes and my view of Newcastle from the very back of the away end. Painful journey back to London.
Some worthy mentions...
Inter Milan 0-0 Genoa Feb 2010. Boring game, boring half empty ground, Genoese fans were banned, it was cold and I had the mother of all hangovers.
Standard Liege 1-1 KV Kortrijk, 23.11.15 - Horrible place, cold, boring, grey, miserable, smells bad, looks worse and the game was dire. Seemed as if it was 3hrs long and just went on and on. The flipside, the beer was good.
Take away the rivalry, I am a sucker for old traditional grounds. As with Upton Park, seeing White Hart Lane demolished is a shame. New stadiums don't have character or charm and they feel more like shopping centres than football stadiums.
I remember sitting on temporary scaffolding and being exposed to the elements. Pot calling the kettle black I hear you say when referring to the London Stadium's temporary seating - I'd be inclined to agree, but at least we have a roof!
