"Roker Roar"

has rated Roker Park 4.0 out of 5.

wonderwasp's review of Roker Park

One of the scariest grounds I ever went to. From the local station we needed a police escort, with Sunderland fans waving fists at us all along the route. But this was 1975, when you took your life in your hands at many an away game.

The roar just before kick-off sounded loud enough to blow the roofs of the houses in the vicinity. I have never heard anything quite like it anywhere else.

Location

In Monkwearmouth rather than Sunderland town itself. Close enough to walk to and from Seaburn station, if you dared to do so.

View

View from the away end fine but this was an open terrace without creature comforts.

Facilities

I can't remember. It was over 40 years ago!

Food & Drink

Long gone from my memory. Sorry.

Police & Stewards

The police saved us from an almighty bashing.

Atmosphere

The Sunderland supporters made a tremendous noise. The only reason I deduct half a point is for the fear that it engendered. 10 minutes before the end local hero Jim Montgomery was injured and had to be carried off. The mood seemed to become even more threatening than before and we headed for the exit fast.
