"Lego ground, but good fans"

stuff10's review of The Liberty Stadium

I visited Swansea's Liberty Stadium for the last game of the 2010/2011 season. It was a bit of a meaningless match with Swansea already assured a play-off place and United already relegated to League 1. Even so, there was a carnival atmosphere with many of the away fans in fancy dress.

We drove to the Liberty, parking our car at an official park and ride facility just off the M4. We were a little hesitant about the car park as it was on a gypsy camp site, but luckily all the wheels and windows were still in tact when we returned to it. The car park is for both home and away fans with each set of supporters getting their own coaches.

Police & Stewards

The stewards at the Liberty Stadium were pretty good - checking our tickets and joking with us that we might be Swansea fans in disguise, despite my wife's United shirt and our obvious Northern accents.

Inside the ground we were told to sit where we liked and once the match started anyone standing wasn't threatened with ejection, but politely asked to stand at the back so that other fans didn't have to stand if they didn't want to. This was great to see as it's often the cause of friction at many grounds.

The only downside was one jobsworth who stopped some of our supporters in fancy dress from doing a "relegation conga". Other than him, the police and stewards were spot-on.

Atmosphere

It was the last game of the season and Swansea were looking forward to the play-offs but even so the atmosphere was second to none. The Swansea fans were loud throughout and it was probably one of the noisiest grounds I've ever been to. As mentioned above, the Swansea fans applauded the Blades supporters out of the ground and on the buses out of town too - a really nice touch from a great bunch of fans.
