"Not up to its reputation"

Anfield is a great old-fashioned ground and a very impressive sight. However, the one thing that the TV drones on about (the atmosphere) was totally missing when we went there. My only visit was for the Carling Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg in 2003, and although an impressive-looking stadium, the Liverpool fans and lack of atmosphere in the ground spoiled it somewhat.

Location

We drove by car and parked up on a side street where some of the local youths said they'd "look after" our car for a couple of quid. To be fair, it was still in one piece when we got back to it, which is more than I can say for the United buses - several of whom had their windows put through that night.

Police & Stewards

We got searched going into the ground where the police and stewards were friendly enough, however a few things happened outside the ground that night... including a fair bit of trouble at some pubs in Liverpool and the United fans' coaches having their windows put through.

Atmosphere

Anfield was one of the worst grounds I've been to in terms of atmosphere. Okay, Sheffield United at home admittedly isn't exactly a glamour tie for them, but this was a cup semi-final 2nd leg and a game which they went into trailing on aggregate! The atmosphere was totally no-existent, apart from the occasional boring drone of "Liverpooool, Liverpooool". Also, the stadium announcer's voice was so boring and monotone that I actually thought about slitting my wrists at one point. It maybe different on European night or when playing Everton/Man Utd, but on my visit it was awful.
