"Featureless"

smithybridge-blue's review of New Douglas Park

Featureless and with no atmosphere, New Douglas Park is a major disappointment for a team that features so high up the Scottish football pyramid. Hidden behind a Sainsbury and a Morrison it comes across as a bit of an afterthought. A building built for purpose, thats all! There is a decent pub opposite the railway station called the Academical Vaults although this is for the use of home fans only.

Location

Not too bad a location as it is a short walk from the centre of Hamilton. It is flanked on two sides by a Morrisons and a Sainsburys in a retail park and can be found to be a little hidden away.

View

No problems with the view of the pitch as the two permanent stands are steeply banked and are raised above ground level (in the Dutch style) by having steps to climb at the front of the stand before the first rows of seats are reached.

Facilities

Toilets clean although they seem to be falling to bits even though the stadium is only 13 years old. (cracks in the breeze block, ceiling worn and in disrepair). Compact club shop with friendly staff. On the approach to the ground - by the only available road entrance (Cadzew Road) - we were told that we were not to park on the official car park and to park near Morrisons. We ignored this "advice" and parked on the main car park for free as we couldn't be bothered to turn the car around and walk balk to the ground once parked. nobody seemed to bother so we got away with it!

Food & Drink

Too few kiosks causing unnecessary queues. Only pies/beverages/soft drinks available within the ground - no alcohol - as all facilities within view of the pitch.

Police & Stewards

Stewards helpful and friendly. No evidence of police presence.

Atmosphere

Dull. Ground has only two permanent stands. Temporary stand empty. Behind the goal turned into an all weather training pitch backed by the rear of a Sainsburys Suopermarket. The part between the temporary stand along the side and the all weather training facility behind the goal appears to be a park area for kids.
