rhatters' review of Bootham Crescent

Bootham Crescent is what football is all about.

With a current capacity of just over 7,000 which has not been reached for some years I can't believe I have been in the stadium with over 13,000 supporters back in the 80s.

The all terraced home end (or Shippo) as the City faithful know it is now covered which has reduced the capacity significantly.

I was stood at this end right behind the goal where Keith Houchen scored the winning penalty against Arsenal in the FA Cup back in 83.

As you look to right from the Shippo you will see the Pop Stand (Popular Stand) which is all seater and you can transfer into this stand for just £1 (bargain) this is where I now watch matches from.

Opposite the Pop Stand is the Main Stand which is also all seater.

At the other end of the gound is the Grosvenor Road end which is where the away fans are situated. This end has no covering although away fans can keep dry by transferring into the Pop Stand which has a few hundred segregated seats set aside for away fans (£1 transfer).

Bootham Crescent is my church.

I have prayed there, cheered there, sung there, laughed there and cried there. All good things must come to an end but the memories of Bootham Crescent will live on forever.

Location

Location is in the middle of an housing estate and street parking is restricted. However football is for the people therefore the stadium should be amongst the people (none of this out of town rubbish).

View

Great view in the Pop Stand as long as you are not sat behind one of the many support pillars.

Facilities

Toilets are shocking.

Food & Drink

Good offering of warm and cold snacks (traditional football fayre) .

Police & Stewards

Over zealous stewarding at times especially with the young kids in the Shippo. Very rarely see a police presence in the ground these days.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere can be very good especially for the big games. Average crowds of around 3,000 doesn't lend itself to an amazing atmosphere but it's our atmosphere which always makes it special. The players will feel it as all areas of the ground are very close to the pitch.
