partizanbristle has rated Memorial Stadium 2.5 out of 5.
First things first and I say this as a Bristol Rovers fan: the Mem is in my view one of the worst, if not the worst, grounds in the football league in terms of a comfortable, urbane "matchday experience". The problems with the place are well-known: not much cover, not enough seated capacity and a bunch of unsightly tents. Rovers have been trying to redevelop or move away from this ground for much of my adult life for a reason.
However as I know this is a site for groundhoppers what I will say about the Mem is:
- It has one of the largest standing capacities in the football league (Brunton Park might be slightly higher but I'm not sure). As a result it's very easy to stand close to the action which I appreciate in a ground.
- It has one of the best terraces for atmosphere left in the country (The North Terrace or colloquially The Blackthorn End).
- It's completely insane. Every stand is different and parts of the ground have three stands on one side. You will see tents, sheds, what looks like a cricket pavilion, sprawling terraces and a raised seated stand that looks like it's defying physics.
- It's slap-bang in a retail/residential area with a huge selection of pubs and eateries. If you enjoy walking to the match from a train or bus and mingling with other supporters there's not many better.
As floored as the Memorial Stadium is, go to it anyway because I promise you will never see anything else like it in the football league.
