johnwickenden's review of The Shooting Field

Visited on a Tuesday evening for the local derby against rivals Storrington FC, in the Southern Combination League Div 1. The Shooting Field is a pretty standard County League ground, better than some in the Division perhaps

Location

The Shooting Field is located about half a mile north of the village / town centre in a residential area The road 'Shooting Field' is actually quite long and runs past the ground, so finding the road, doesn't guarantee finding the Football club ! The best bet is to follow signs for Steyning Grammar School as the ground is located next to the main entrance. Car parking on the site is almost non-existent so you'll have to find space in the surrounding roads. There is no station in the town - the nearest one being in Shoreham-by-Sea, some 8 miles away, but local buses do run up Shooting Field (the road)

View

I'm not quite sure when the previous report of this ground was written but there clearly are stands containing seats at the Shooting Field. All facilities are on the near side as you enter the ground. Immediately to the left of the turnstiles is a small covered standing area. To the right is the first stand, which is located in front of the clubhouse and contains 50 seats. This stretches approx 20 yards towards the halfway line. Beyond the halfway line is another, identical, stand - again containing 50 seats; this structure being named "the John Brown Stand". The stands themselves are comfortable enough (seats are plastic but not of the tip up variety). The view from both is slightly obscured by stanchions along the front (see photo). There is also a hard path which runs all the way around the pitch.

Facilities

Toilets are in the clubhouse. There is no club shop, nor are any club souvenirs etc available.

Food & Drink

There is a bar in the clubhouse. The tea bar is next to the turnstile and it sells tea, coffee & hot chocolate £1, chips £1.50 and Burger £3.00.

Atmosphere

My visit coincided with the local derby against Storrington, this brought the biggest league gate of the season so far (87) although an early season cup match saw a crowd of over 200 !
Being a local derby the crowd was more vocal than the numbers present suggested !
