johnwickenden's review of Recreation Way

Mildenhall Town spent many years in the Eastern Counties league before winning promotion and spending 2 seasons in the Isthmian North. Unfortunately, this culminated in a relegation last season and they now find themselves back in the ECL. However, promotion to a higher league did mean that the club had to install more covered seats, which approximately doubled the number available. This makes it one of the bigger grounds in the ECL, with facilities to match.

Location

The ground location makes it probably one of the easiest to find in the league. Basically, it's right in the town centre and is next to a big Sainsburys store. I'm not sure that visitors to the ground are really meant to use the store car park (it has a 2 hour limit on it), but the is a free car park adjacent to it. Being in the town centre it is also within minutes of pubs and places to eat. The only downside is that Mildenhall has no railway station. The nearest one is in the vlllage of Lakenheath, 6 miles away, but the service to here is so infrequent as to be pointless

View

The Main stand and Clubhouse are on the 'Sainsburys' side of the ground. The stand itself is small and quite old fashioned and has simple wooden bench seats. Beyond the clubhouse is an area of cover for people who want to stand. During my visit a lot of people stood on the raised area outside the clubhouse.
The far side of theground is where the new seater stand is located, although rather oddly this is located in line with the left hand penalty area. This is one of the metal arena type stands and holds between 50-100. The rest of the pitch surround is a flat concrete path

Facilities

There are toilets both in the clubhouse and in a portacabin near the turnstiles. There is a club shop (of sorts). Basically, it's a cabinet in the bar, tell them what you want and they will get it from a cupboard. They had scarves, hats, badges, pennants, shirts etc on offer - far more than you normally find at this level.
The programme was quite thick and had a fair bit of content - as is usual for ECL clubs - but wasn't particularly well made.

Food & Drink

Didn't try anything

Atmosphere

The match was a League Cup tie and a local derby against Lakenheath from the division below. This brought out a suprisingly large crowd of 230+ and the atmosphere was, accordingly, better than normal at this level
