johnwickenden's review of Nyewood Lane

I visited here for a Ryman Premier game against AFC Sudbury in October 2016. I had my elderly father with me, who needs to use a wheelchair. Nyewood Lane is, in my opinion, one of the best grounds in the Ryman League; hardly suprising as the Rocks played at the level above (Conference South) for some years.

Location

The ground is located in the NW of Bognor Regis, about 20 mins walk from the railway station. It is is an area which is mainly residential and is near to the tennis, rugby and bowls clubs (all of Bognor's sporting facilities seem to be co-located).. The club is located down an entrance lane off Nyewood Lane itself. There is, essentially, no parking on site for fans, although they do have a limited number of spaces available for visitors with disabilities if you phone before the game (I was able to park here due to my father being in a wheelchair). Other than that it's street parking or using the rugby club car park on the far side of the ground. Didn't see any pubs nearby so you're best eating in the town centre or visiting the clubhouse once inside the ground if you need sustenance.

View

The main entrance to the ground is in the South East Corner. The Main stand runs along the southern side of the pitch. Nywood Lane is unusual at this level in that it has covered accomodation on 3 sides of the ground - only the eastern end (where the clubhouse is located) is uncovered terrace. The only seats are in the main stand and transfer to these costs and extra £1 on top of admission. The view in all areas is excellent apart from the floodlight pylons being pitchside.

Facilities

There are toilets in the clubhouse or in a portacabin outside. There is a clubshop just inside the entrance to the ground and this sold a reasonable amount of stuff - replica shirts, tee shirts, scarfs, badges, old programmes etc

Food & Drink

There was a large food portacabin next to the clubshop. This had plenty of staff and could accomodate two queues so service was pretty quick. Food was reasonably priced.

Police & Stewards

No police in evidence but the match was well stewarded by guys who were helpful and considerate to my father.

Atmosphere

Crowd of over 500, so Bognor are one of the best supported teams in the league. Sudbury brought a fair few down as well and all in all it led to a good noisy game. I've heard League matches quieter than this.
