johnwickenden's review of Northolme

Northolme is always high on he list of must visits for groundhoppers and, frankly, I fully understand why. It's a traditional, old fashioned football ground; the kind that is often sold off for property development. It has character in abundance and is good value. All in all, it's one of my favourite grounds

Location

The ground is only about 200m north of the town centre, easy walking distance from Gainsborough Central Station (not so convenient for Gainsborough Lea Road) and thhe buses. It's proximity to the town means that there are plenty of pubs nearby and there is a KFC and a Maccy Dee's a short walk away. In addition the club have the use of a piece of waste ground opposite the ground and use this as a car park, charging £2. Location wish it doesn't get much better.

View

The turnstiles are situated behind the goal adjacent to the covered terrace known as the Town End. From here the main stand - the Ping Stand - is to the left. This is a small stand with about 500 seats, which straddles the halfway line, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character.. Opposite the main stand is the North Terrace which runs the length of the pitch and is segregated about 2/3 along. The far end is the only uncovered area of the ground and is reserved for visiting supporters. The height of the terracing on the three sides is perfectly adequate to allow views for all

Facilities

Toliets adjacent to the Ping Stand and in the North Terrace. These are old fashioned and probably the poorest facility in the ground There is a club shop selling replica shirts, tee shirts scarves, badges etc and old programs in the corner between the Town End and the Ping Stand side

Food & Drink

There is the clubhouse next to the clubshop with another bar adjacent to the turnstiles outside the ground. The snackbar is located in the corner of the Town End and North Terrace and was very good value. Hot drinks £1, chips (with cheese or curry sauce or beans) £2 and Meat pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy £4.50

Police & Stewards

Unobtrusive

Atmosphere

I was here for a pre-season friendly against Hull City but the atmosphere was good, despite there being almost no away support
