johnwickenden's review of Millbank Linnets Stadium

I visited here to watch a pre-season friendly between Runcorn Linnets and Marine. The Linnets were born out of the ashes of the former Runcorn FC / Runcorn Halton FC who spent the 1980s in the conference. The present incarnation was set up by the fans as the previous club was in its death throes and they currently play in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division. The visitors for this friendly were making a short trip over the Mersey and normally ply their trade in the Northern Premier League Premier Divison, two steps higher than their hosts.

Location

The Millbank Linnets Stdium is located in the suburb of Murdishaw which is located in the south east of Runcorn. The ground is not close to any rail station (with Frodsham probabky nearer than Runcorn), but it is reasonably close to the M56. If coming from the north, it seemed that - at the time of my visit (July 2016) half the roads in Runcorn were being rebuilt - getting there wasn't that easy due to all the diversions. There is plenty of car parking on site, with overflow parking on the grass area next to the ground. The stadium is located next to the Halton Arms pub, althought there didn't appear to be anywhere else to drink or eat in the immeadiate vicinity.

View

The turnstiles are located next to the clubhouse with the ground itself a further hundred yards along a path, completely shielded from the outside. Entry into the ground is directly behind one goal and, immeadiately to the right is a small covered terrance. The main stand runs along the right hand touchline with the usual plastic seats ( about 100 in the club colours of green and yellow). The opposite touchline has three covered areas of standing, with just a simple path behind the far goal.

Facilities

Toliets are in a portakabin type thing near the turnstiles. The clubhouse has a simple snack bar but no licensed bar (as there is a pub next door). A range of club merchandise is available inside the clubhouse.

Food & Drink

Didn't try it myself but it looked standard non-league fayre

Police & Stewards

Not for a pre-season friendly

Atmosphere

Actually quite a big crowd here for the visitor of Marine - probably about 150. Reasonably noisey and vocal throughout the game - i wonder what it would be like for a league game against local rivals Runcorn Town or Widnes?
