johnwickenden's review of Mill Road

So, a Tuesday night in February, when the temperature is due to be sub-zero and the game is between one of the perennial strugglers and a team that are the epitomy of mid-table - Arundel and AFC Uckfield Town.
Arundel's ground is famously picturesque and is conveniently close to the town centre, but other than that........

Location

Mill Lane is located on the south eastern side of the town of Arundel. It’s famous for the photographs of the Castle towering above the main stand (see later) and it is located the town side of the RSPB wildfowl refuge. An easier ten minute walk from the station) which is actually located outside the town and in close proximity to the town centre with pubs and restaurants (less than 5 minutes away) make this a decent enough place to visit. There is also a large pay and display car park next door (charges do not apply for Tuesday night games).

View

As for the ground itself, entry is through a set of ornamental iron gates behind one goal. As you come into the ground the clubhouse is to the right with the changing rooms to the left. The Main stand is along the left hand touchline and contains about 75-100 seats. On the opposite touchline, nearer the clubhouse end is (what used to be) a covered terrace. Unfortunately at the time of my visit this was very much uncovered. That’s about it as far as spectator accommodation goes at Mill Road – very much a county league standard ground.

Facilities

Toilets are located in the bar / clubhouse. There is no clubshop, nor do the club sell any merchandise from behind the bar. In fact, when I arrived at the game I was told they had sold out of programmes. OK, but the total crowd was 27 and I was one of the first there ! I suspect that the reality is they just couldn’t be bothered to produce one.

Food & Drink

Drinks are obviously available in the bar and there is also a snack hut next to the main stand which sells the usual fayre.

Atmosphere

Crowd? 27….Arundel are not one of the big guns in this league. Uckfield brought a few and they were the noisier fans (even giving their player manager some grief).
