"Stafford Rangers - Marston Road"

has rated Marston Road 3.5 out of 5.

johnwickenden's review of Marston Road

Formerly one of the original members of the old Alliance Premier League (now the Conference National), Rangers have fallen on hard times in recent years. Marston Road is an older traditional ground which copes with large crowds week in, week out, but certainly looks like it could do with some modernisation.

Location

Being a traditional old ground, Marston Road is located fairly close to the town centre. It's a few hundered yards north in a residential area. The town, station and shops are all within easy walking distance (the walk being past Stafford Prison). There are plenty of pubs in the nearby streets with loads of places to eat in the town. There is a car park on site with more parking available in the industrial estate oppostire the ground

View

Turnstiles are at the north end of the ground next to the social club. In front of this is an uncovered standing area. The main stand is to the right (on the west side) and straddles the halfway line with about 200-300 seats. Admission to the seats is on payment of an extra fee. The far (southern) end of the ground is an open terrace which consists of about 10 steps. The left hand side (eastern side) of the ground houses a covered terrace which runs aproximately 75% of the pitch length. Views from everywhere are good, although the stands do look tired.

Facilities

There are toilets in the social club, in the rear of the main stand and in a portacabin in the north east corner. There is also a small club shop next to the Main Stand

Food & Drink

Drinks etc available in the social club and there is a burger van next to the main stand with prices and fayre being standard. There also appeared to be a fans bar beneath the stand but entry seemed to be restricted?

Police & Stewards

Stewards were there but unobtrusive

Atmosphere

Stafford have a large and vocal support, averaging over 500 per home game. This visit was a local derby against Halesowen Town who brought a fair few supporters too. Plenty of banter and chants (although a note in the programme indicated that perhaps some home fans have gone a little over the top recently?)
