Another match where it was touch and go due to wet weather on previous days and again one where my preferred option – Rusthall v Lordswood in the SCEL – was cancelled. Cobham confirmed via twitter that their game versus Frimley Green (In Combined Counties Division 1) was on by mid-Saturday morning.
On arriveal it is clear that there are close links between Cobham and Chelsea, with the latter very much in evidence in pictures etc (Chesea's training ground is only about a mile away), so with their rich benefactors, Cobham could certainly improve their ground and plans are underway to do just that.
Cobham’s ground – named The Reg Madgewick Stadium, but known as Leg’o’Mutton Field – is about 2 minutes walk from Cobham High Street with it’s shops, pubs and places to eat. The nearest Railway station to the ground is Cobham and Stoke D’Abernon which is in the latter village. This is about 3 miles away from the ground which, itself has a small car park.
Entry to the ground is through a single turnstile in the corner of the ground and, upon entry, the stands are ahead of you with the clubhouse and changing rooms behind. There are two stands on this side of the pitch, the larger (Main) Stand straddles the halfwayline and contains approximately 100 seat whilst the second is a few yards to the right. Both of these are of new metal construction. Behind the far goal is a low covered terrace running pretty much the width of the pitch. The other two sides are uncovered.
Toilets are inside the clubhouse. There is no clubshop but they do have badges etc in stock. The programme was a rather disappointing affair, consisting of 8 glossy colour pages of advertising and a small 4 page paper insert relevant to the match
The clubhouse – which is a wooden building - itself contained a bar plus a servery at the far end serving hot food and drinks. There were plans on display on the noticeboard showing the proposed new clubhouse which will be a modern glass and steel structure. If this comes to fruition it will be a real bonus for the club
The welcome I received was very enthusiastic and the Vice Chairman of the club was delighted when he found out I planned to take photos of the match. Being a Step6 match the crowd was never going to be particularly boisterous, but the 55 people there got behind their team and, after a poot firsthalf, had something to shout about as the hosts overcame visitors Frimley Green 3-0
