I visited Ironworks Road to see a Durham Challenge Cup tie between Tow Law Town and Harton and Westoe or the Wearside League. i once read hat you can't watch football anywhere closer to the moon in Britain than at Tow Law. This fact wasnt lost on me during this game. Whilst the rest of the country seemed to be basking in temperatures up to 80F +, it was decidedly chilly in Tow Law and, by the end of the game a thunderstorm was raging. Never mind - Ironworks Road had been on my 'to do' list for some time.
Its a friendly club, the ground itself is built next to a disused railway line and the pitch has a decided slope across towards the Main Stand.
Tow Law itself is on the A68 Darlington to Corbridge road. The town is approx 900 feet above see level and has no station - the nearest one being in Bishop Auckland, 15 miles away. Ironworks Road is close to the town centre and the ground has a small car park adjacent to it
Entrance to the ground is behind the goal at the Ironworks Road end, co-located with the clubhouse and bar. Te Main Stand houses about 100-150 deats and is painted in black and white , the club colours, with their nickname . "The Lawyers" painted along the front.. The opposite side of the ground (the car park side) is terraced along the full length but has no cover, whilst the far end has a covered terrace along the full width of the pitch
Toilets are in the clubhouse or adjacent to the changing rooms. There is no club shop but pin badges etc are on sale in the bar. There was no programme produced for this match
It's your standard non-league fayre which is sold from a hatch on the side of the clubhouse. Reasonable prices, with meat pies at £1.50 and chips and curry sauce at £2.
The crowd was only 55 for this county cup tie so it was difficult to assess what it's like normally
