johnwickenden's review of High Road

Also known as the NRT Stadium, this is the home of Chipstead of the Isthmian Div 1 South. It's location in the Surrey Hills and the lack of structures along the far touchline mean that there are views over the Netherne Valley towards Caterham. Not quite to the same standard as league rivals such as Chatham and Whyteleafe, but it's clear that it has been much improved since promotion from the Combined Counties League.

Location

The ground is rurally located in minor roads about a mile from the A23, about a mile north of the northern end of the M23. The nearest station is some distance away - Chipstead or the more regularly served Coulsdon South. There is a car park at the ground with space for most of the spectators that attend the games. The ground is also located some way outside Chipstead village, so there aren't many pubs nearby.

View

The turnstile is located in the southwest corner of the ground. Upon entry there is a covered terrace to the right, partially behind the near goal. The Main Stand is straight ahead, along the near touchline, finishing adjacent to the halfway line and holds about 150.. There are no stantions to block the view. The rest of the pitch is surrounded by a hard path.

Facilities

There are toilets in the clubhouse (just to the left of the turnstiles) and in an outside temporary building. There is no club shop but club hats, scarves and pin badges can be bought from the clibhouse bar and the "Muddy Boot" teabar.

Food & Drink

Licensed bar in the clubhouse. "The Muddy Boot" is, whilst not huge, good value, serving food which is generally priced lower than at other Isthmian grounds (Chips £1, Hot Dog or Burger £2)

Atmosphere

My visit was to see the Easter Monday local derby with rivals Whyteleafe. The crowd was 122, which, whilst not large, is probably 50% more than the average gate. The Chipstead supporters made some noise, but Whyteleafe's fans have always proved more vocal than most in this league !
