"Nice ground - if it's not raining"

has rated Haig Avenue (Merseyrail Community Stadium) 3.0 out of 5.

johnwickenden's review of Haig Avenue (Merseyrail Community Stadium)

An old fashioned ground, not much room (or cash I suspect) for expansion here. Perhaps looks a little dated against the likes of Forest Green Rovers and Eastleigh, but it has a lot more character. My visit coincided with the new floodlights being used for the first time.

Location

About a mile outside the town centre, but car parking in residential roads wasn't a problem when I visited (for a Tuesday night game)

View

The Main stand looks quite impressive, however I elected to stand on the popular side opposite (I believe it used to be a covered terrace in years gone by). This consists of about 8 steps of terracing and the view was good throughout. Unfortunately this side now has no cover nor does the away end, so, if it rains, fans are going to get very wet.

Facilities

The kiosks and the toilets all appeared to be on one side of the ground (the side of the main stand)

Police & Stewards

When I visited Southport were at home to Chester, so almost a derby game. Chester brought a large following and about 50 kids aged 15-16 from the home support seemed intent on baiting them. The Stewards and Police (about 5 of the latter) were kept busy sending the kids away and prevented any trouble escalating.

Atmosphere

Southport are struggling at the moment so the home support was fairly quiet, although a few unusual chants were in evidence. The away fans made as much noise at times.
Pity about the mindless teens trying to go back to the late 1970s !
