johnwickenden's review of Coles Lane

Visited here to see the lodgers - Romulus FC - take on Bedworth Utd in a NPL Div 1 South fixture. Although not quite a local derby, Bedworth are one of the nearest teams in the division to Sutton Coldfield, geographically, and the crowd for this match was around the 100 mark.

Location

Coles Lane is located slightly south of Sutton Coldfield town centre with the station being about 15-20 mins walk. The ground itself is located in a residantial area so I didn't notice any pubs but places to eat and drink are plentiful in the town centre, with a TGIs and a Nandos being close. Car parking is plentiful at the stadium.

View

The turnstiles / car park entrance is next to the Main Stand at Coles Lane. The stand itself straddles the halfway line and gives the impression of being very tall. There are no seats at ground level - this being the terrace behind the dugouts and the stand is accessed by stairs at the rear. There is a covered terrace behind the goal to the right. The far side of the ground is uncovered except for one small prefab metal stand at the left hand end, which has approx 50 seats. Behind the left hand end is the clubhouse / bar and food outlet, whilst there is another small stand (The Richard Underwood Stand) behind the corner flag on the turnstiles side of the ground. The seats in the main stand are benches although the view from al areas is pretty good and unobstructed.

Facilities

Toilets are in the clubhouse or to the right of the main stand. There is no club shop - I managed to pick up a pin badge from the turnstiles/

Food & Drink

The list of what was on offer at the snack bar was probably the longest I have seen at any non-league ground. They even had faggots chips mushy peas and gravy on offer ! Prices looked pretty good too.

Atmosphere

Romuus don't draw big crowds, being the smaller (and newer) of the two Sutton Coldfield teams and, as such, Bedworths travelling support made most of the noise. The lack of cover around the ground detracted from the atmosphere and the loudest noise were the frequent freight trains on the railway behind the ground
