johnwickenden's review of Celtic Park

I visited Celtic Park for a weekend game between Cwbran Celtic and Cambrian & Clydach Vale in the Welsh Footbal League Division 1 (one step below the Dafabet Welsh Premier). For the most part, unless the team has a history in at the higher level (such as Barry Town, Llanelli or Haverfordwest County) most WFL clubs grounds are distinctly rudimentary - they may or may not have seats even, dependant upon the division in which they play. Cwmbran Celtic, being in Division 1, Cwmbran's is on e of the better I have visited

Location

The ground is located next door to Cwmbran Athletics Stadium (look for the huge grandstand) and is approximately 400m south of the town centre. Cwmbran rail station is to the north of the town centre itself. I don't know what the place is like for food and drink as I didn't venture into the town. Presumably it has places to eat and drink. The stadium itself has a large car park, part of which overlooks Celtic Park which means that some people enjoys getting a ffree view of the match and deprive the club of much needed revenue

View

The entrance to the ground (they don't have 'turnstiles' at this level) is adjacent to the car park, behind the goal. The near side of the ground contains a smaller metal stand which contians a number of steps but no seats. The other side has a newly constructed (for this season) stand containing over 200 seats. The stand has shutters along the front so it can be closed between games to prevent vandalism....this practise is common in South Wales. There is a hard path surrounding the pitch with no shelter or terracing behind the goals

Facilities

Toilets are in the changing room block behind the far goal. This is a reasonably new build, but the facilities are imited. There is no clubshop but it was the first team in this league that I found sold pin badges from the tea bar.
The programme produced by the club is easily the best have seen at this level in Wales - full colour and plenty to read !

Food & Drink

There is no clubhouse or bar. The changing room block has a tea bar which sells hot and cold drinks and crisps / chocolate

Atmosphere

The crowd was only 70 but the locals were very friendly (I kept getting asked if I was the groundhopper and how far I had travelled). Not much in the way of singing or cheering
