johnwickenden's review of Avenue Stadium

I visited this ground to watch the 2017 Dorset Senior Cup final which saw Dorchester's bitter (hated) rivals Weymouth take on minnows Gillingham Town. As this wasn't a Dorchester home match the atmosphere was different than it would normally be.

Location

The Avenue Stadium is a fairly new ground, having been built in 1990 with the proceeds from the sale of Dorchester's old ground to Tesco (the Tesco store is actually next door to the ground). The ground is located on Weymouth Avenue right next to the main Dorchester ring road (A35). The ground is blessed with a very large car park and is located about 20 minutes walk from the town centre with it's pubs, resturants and rail station

View

The Main stand is on the west side of the ground and contains over 700 seats. The stand is a tall structure for a non-league ground and generally there is a good view. The southern end and east side of the ground are covered terraces, whist the northern end (tesco) is uncovered. Each of the terraces has about 6 steps each of which are quite tall. For viewing this is probably one of the best grounds outside the conference and is easily that level.

Facilities

There are toilets located at various places around the ground. There is a club shop located on the east terrace (shut during my visit) the the main club office in the main stand sold badges etc.

Food & Drink

There is a bar located in the depths of the Main stand and various refreshment kiosks in the corners of the ground. There was a good variety on offer at reasonable prices

Police & Stewards

As this was the County Cup Final there were stewards on hand although they kept out of the way and were there if needed

Atmosphere

The attendance must have been nearly 600 and the vast majority were Weymouth fans. Weymouth are a well supported club anyway and their fans made a lot of noise throughout. The 30 or so Gillingham Town fans played there part by chanting at the Terras.
