I went to the Rec to watch Ammanford take on local rivals Llanelli Town in the Welsh Football League Division 2. This is real grass roots football, with no frills to the game. Ammanford is a bit of a bastion of the Welsh language with quite a high percentage of the locals being fluent, so the conversations on the touchline were a bit of a challenge for me !
The football ground is co-located with the town\'s rugby pitches and indoor bowls centre (brown signed from the A483). The town railway station is about 10 minutes walk away. There are pubs and eating places in the town centre, just a few minutes walk away
Well.. the rec does have a stand. There aren\'t any seats in it and, in inclement weather, it will shelter about 40 people ! Like I said - grass roots football .
The pitch is surrounded by fencing to seperate it from the rest of the complex but as this is a simple wire affair this also means that everyone outside can watch the game. There is no turnstile per se...just gap in the fence with a table where a guy takes the admission money and offers hot drinks.
There are no floodlights at the ground (as with many others at this level in Wales) so the midweek lickoff was at 6.30 to ensure the game finished in daylight.
At least everyone can see the action !
There aren\'t any. No loos, no tea bar (except for what the guy has at the entrance), no club shop. There are programmes....the one for my game was essentially last seasons effort with an insert for the Llanelli game.
It\'s lack of facilities makes it quaint (unless you need a pee)
See above. The football club share the sport and social club with Ammanford Cricket Club which is about 5 mins away
Actually, the local derby nature of this game meant there were about 100 spectators present and there was quite a bit of banter..... really quite enjoyable
