"Great views, dilapidated ‘stadium!’"

garethawhite's review of Municipal Stadium

As a Cyprus regular, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit 2nd Division strugglers Ayia Napa FC’s stadium this week, during the yearly Youth Competition the city holds over Easter. As luck would have it, I was able to take in a Youth Game as part of this and the stadium was fully open and spectators in!

Location

I took the 101 bus from Nissi Beach into the centre of Ayia Napa and used my trusty Google Maps to direct me, up the hill and away from the hustle and bustle towards the community stadium. From the centre, it is a mere 0.85 mile, 10-15 minute stroll, perfect for those young party-goer types to blow their hangovers away!

It is all uphill on the way to the stadium but it really isn’t far. A taxi up would cost less than €5 I would suggest, if you couldn’t be bothered with the walk.

There is plenty of parking available at the stadium if you have a vehicle.

As you are up high, the views down towards the city and west to maina/ east to Cape Greco, are pretty spectacular.

View

Wooden slat seating and no coverage but hey, this is Cyprus right? It doesn’t rain too often! No poles, so every seat gives a great view.

Given the very, very basic infrastructure, you can see why Ayia Napa has to play ‘bigger games’ at the nearby Paralimni Stadium and also why they had to play the whole season there when they got promoted to the Cypriot 1st Division.

Facilities

The toilet block was open but it was weirdly right next to the team’s changing rooms! I’m not sure if they use alternatives for 1st Team games but it would make for a bizarre experience for players and fans.

Food & Drink

The kiosk was open and seemed very friendly and welcoming. Having just plundered an all-inclusive lunch at the hotel, I wasn’t hungry but all seemed decent and cheap enough. If you’re fancying a few drinks, it may be worth having them in the pubs in the town before strolling up to the ground.

Atmosphere

It was mainly parents/ relatives in the ground but it seemed as though when more full, the stadium could generate a decent atmosphere!
