"Where's your famous atmosphere?"

So much is written and said about the Anfield atmosphere. One of the maverick stadiums. Best atmosphere. Best fans. A glamorous stadium. I disagree with all of these. Maybe the atmosphere deceived expectation due to the season that Liverpool had had, or hadn't had. Maybe it was just one of those days. However, Liverpool v Chelsea is a big match where a big rivalry has built up over the past five years or so. The atmosphere from the home supporters reflected this in no way at all.

Location

Not in the best of locations, although the 'Soccerbus' from Sandhills station is a great idea by Merseytravel and is very efficient. If this wasn't there then the nearest station would be Kirkdale which is a bit of a walk but still not too bad.

View

Comfortable? No. Good view? No. I was unfortunate to have a restricted view seat and had a big post (or possibly, drain pipe) blocking my view. Having stood with a mate prior to kick off who was more central in the away section the view was no better. Quite cramped too.

Facilities

Toilets were very small and not particularly clean, even for stadium toilets!

Didn't look at the food or drink.

Police & Stewards

The worst stewards I've ever come across. When sticking a v-sign in the air (admittedly not the nicest thing to do) to You'll Never Walk Alone (a fantastic song which is now in my eyes tainted) I was told, whilst being held by the arm, ''carry on like that and you'll watch from the pub!" Charming.

Atmosphere

The biggest let-down. So many words have been spoken by commentators, pundits and other media people, but on my first visit this just wasn't the case. The stadium itself I found to be bland and the atmosphere only added to this. There were small pockets of fans singing but the Chelsea fans (outnumbered 43,000 to 2,000, which I find a small allocation for a Premiership stadium) outsung the home fans all afternoon.
