Recreation Park is neat and tidy and obviously well looked after. However its major drawbacks are the distance from public transport services and the town centre, the lack of shelter in inclement weather conditions and the open aspect which makes it difficult to generate a good atmosphere even at big matches.
On the outskirts of St. Andrews and in the middle of a housing estate, the ground is some distance from the nearest bus routes and from the centre of town. St. Andrews itself has a good bus service - regular services from Dundee and express bus service from Edinburgh. There is no rail service.
The view of the pitch from any part of the ground is excellent. however there are no seating areas and only a very small covered enclosure - not a ground to visit on a wet day!
there is a large relatively modern social club with function area, bar and catering which I would guess could be available to visiting supporters, although this was not the case at the game I attended (a Scottish Cup Tie versus Pollok who brought a large number of fans).
the toilets are inside the social club and are made available to non members. There is a sufficient number of toilets - they are clean and well kept with hand wash facilities, paper towels etc.
On my visit there was a catering van providing the usual range of reasonably priced delicacies of acceptable quality. The large crowd did however mean that there was a constantly large queue until well into the second half.
stewards ere friendly and helpful and controlled access to the social club toilets
Although there was a large crowed who were lined around all sides of the pitch and the match was evenly balanced until c. the 70th minute, the atmosphere was disappointing. Perhaps this was a result of the ground and its surroundings being so open with no stands or enclosures to create an enclosed space.
