bigaitch has rated New Writtle Street 4.0 out of 5.
In its day, NWS had a capacity of 16,000, although this was somewhat reduced in its final days. It was terraced all the way round with the covered Wolsley Road end giving off a terrific atmosphere. Add to that the raised grandstand which seated 1,500, and up to the mid 80s you had one of the best non league grounds in the country.
10 minutes walk from Chelmsford station, and the town centre, local buses passed nearby, what more could you want?
Excellent views from the stand which was raised above the changing rooms and clubhouse, without any pillars in the way. The terraces too allowed for excellent viewing.
The ground was aged, the toilets a little antiquated, and the whole place generally a little tired - but a ground oozing atmosphere from every corner.
The food was nothing special, but there again nothing too bad either. The clubhouse though was more expensive than the Bird in Hand pub across the road, which went against the norm in non league grounds.
Not applicable.
Monday night, it only took a crowd of around 500 to generate a decent atmosphere particularly in the Wolsley Road End. However, Saturday afternoons were never quite the same.
