bigaitch has rated Belle Vue 3.0 out of 5.
I went in Donny's last season before relegation to the Conference in 1998, in fact I saw their last win, 1-0 against Hull City. Two poor sides who since have turned the tide somewhat. The ground was old an decaying, no question, however it was reasonably sized and offered good views of the action, and generated a good atmosphere. Facilities were poor, but the club at the time was in the dubious 'ownership' of Ken Richardson whose priorities, shall we say were not football. There was plenty of cover on both sides, and the main stand was a tall structure that had been crudely extended to the front, and suffered with many pillars obstructing views. However, it was unique and a very homely venue.
I drove to Belle Vue, and the ground was situated on the main Bawtry Road within a short distance from the A1 making it easy to approach and exit from. The large car-park behind the main stand was a massive bonus.
Excellent view from the popular side terrace. No obstructions at all.
Catering and toilet facilities were not great. No hot food, and toilets from the dark ages.
Chocolate bars, crisps and hot drinks. That was it.
Potentially hostile encounter between Yorkshire rivals and with Donny in a poor state on and off the pitch, the potential for trouble was huge. However, that was matched by the police presence which kept a lid on it very well.
Donny were at death's door and feeling amongst the locals were hostile to those in charge. However they got behind their team made up of mainly local youngsters and loanees which made for a great atmosphere which kept the right side of the line separating enthusiastic and hostile.
