KV Mechelen v Club Brugge KV - Belgium First Division A - Friday, 29th July 2016
This was the first game of the Belgium rebranded top flight, with the opening of two new stands meaning a record attendance. Champions Brugge won comfortably two-nil; they dominated without being that threatening.
The ground is about half a mile walk from the town centre, with plenty of free on-street parking nearby. A few bars and food outlets nearby. Some road closures in the lead up to the game, so traffic was a bit sticky, but as we parked early we had no problems.
Walking to the ground, we could not go one way, as the Police closed the road near the away fans entrance. The first entrance we tried, resulted in my wife being refused entry as she was carrying a handbag - no bags of any type are allowed. So we had to walk all the way round to the otherside of the ground.
We could only get standing tickets in block C and because of the trouble getting in to the ground, we arrived quite late. The terrace is low and it was full, so our view was pretty limited.
Basic, but fine.
Usual Belgium ground, lots of beer for sale and quite a lot of food.
The Police were outside the ground and did their job, but not too cheerfully. Stewards were fine, but there was no need for them to take any action.
Strangely, a packed home terrace full of drinking fans was really placid. Barely a cheer and no reaction to conceding. The Brugge fans filled their section and were really upbeat and constantly singing, making the atmosphere more entertaining.
