St Louis MLS stadium plans revealed

St Louis MLS stadium plans revealed

Tuesday 30th April 2019

The American MLS has announced plans to expand to 30 teams and St Louis has wasted no time at all throwing their hat into the ring with plans to build a new stadium.

The stadium would be located on the regenerated Downtown West area of the city and would seat between 22,000 and 25,000 spectators.

Uniquely, the pitch would be sunk 40-feet below street level which would allow for steep stands giving a close view of the action - the aim being that no seat will be more than 120 feet from the pitch, with the closest being just 20 feet from the action.

footballgroundmap.com reaches 15,000 grounds milestone

footballgroundmap.com reaches 15,000 grounds milestone

Wednesday 27th March 2019

This month we've hit the amazing milestone of 15,000 football grounds on the website.

Sportpark Zwaluwen

The 15,000th was Sportpark Zwaluwen, home of VV Zwaluwen a Dutch team playing in the 5th tier of the pyramid in the Netherlands. Based just west of Rotterdam, the stadium holds 2,750 fans and has already been ticked off by one keen groundhopper!

Recently, the site has seen a surge in the number of grounds in our database. It took almost 10 years to reach 6,000 but in the summer of 2017 several amazing people on Twitter volunteered to help and have added an incredible 10,000 new grounds to the website in 18 months.

When I originally started the site back in 2007, I had no idea that it would become as popular as it has. We still get daily requests for new stadiums to be added and it's great to see so many grounds from all over the world.

As well as 15,000 grounds, were also closing in on our 150,000th registered user.

But we're not done - we still want more football stadiums adding. So if there's a stadium you've been to which we don't have listed, please contact me and we'll get it added for you.

York City stadium delayed

Tuesday 19th February 2019

York City Council have announced a delay to opening the new stadium which York City FC will be using.

This season (2018/2019) was due to be the club's last after 87 years at Bootham Crescent. However, construction delays have forced that date back, with the club now being forced to play the first few games next season at their old home.

Once completed, the new ground at Monks Cross to the north east of the city will be shared the York Knights rugby league club. It will have a capacity of 8,000.

No new opening date has been given.
