Millwall vs Wigan Athletic, Wembley Stadium, 18 April 1999.
I was 6 years old, and went to the game with my Mum, Nan, Grandad and Cousins for my first Millwall game. Weirdly, now I'm 19, I remember it perfectly! The journey, the atmosphere before in Wembley way, the distinct lack of Wigan fans (47,000 of the 55,000 fans in attendance, were Millwall fans). I also remember we lost the game thanks to a late goal (3 mins in to injury time).
Have to name a few including...
Millwall 4-1 West Ham , good for obvious reasons.
Millwall 4-0 Charlton Athletic, again,a local derby win.
Millwall 5-0 Oldham Athletic, promoted to Championship as champions years ago!
Charlton Athletic 4-4 Millwall, amazing game.
But the big ones are....
Millwall 1-0 Sunderland, FA Cup Semi Final,Old Trafford.
Millwall 1-0 Swindon Town, Promotion from League One at Wembley, Playoff Final.
Hartlepool United 2-3 Millwall, 2-0 down at half time, Pools missed a penalty, we were on the ropes. Neil Harris came on, and scored a hat trick in the last ten minutes, less than a 150 Millwall fans, but we went crazy all the same!
Easy. Worse than losing 3-0 to United in the FA Cup Final, or 3-2 to Scunthorpe in the play off final....
Brighton and Hove Albion 4-1 Millwall. The Withdean Stadium
The result is bad enough, but the fact that this was at Brighton notoriously crap Withdean stadium, in February, in -2 temperatures, 60 mph winds and rain, in an away end (temporary stand, like something from The Masters /Ikea) 45 yards behind the goal...WITHOUT A ROOF! I got fed up, and headed back for the car at 3-1 down, 20 minutes left (and I never do that), drenched because I had worn a coat as waterproof as a box of kleenex, freezing and angry...and they scored again. Not a classic.
The Stadium - Huge, Steep stands, very smart, but still had a classic football feel to it.
Pubs, Beer and Food - We went to the Dorfkrug in Buer, Arsenal fans were served big German beers (Krombacher being the favourite) along with Bratwurst, Chips, Dumplings and other German favourites, from roughly 11 am,had an amazing piss up, atmosphere was electric and we were joined by Schalke fans, who joint the party in a way that would never happen in England!
Stewards and Police - Relaxed, but present, they didnt over react when the Arsenal fans celebrated there goals, or be a picky as the UK is, standing was allowed, and the stewards were low key, letting everyone enjoy rather than look over there shoulders all the time.
Atmosphere - I travelled with some gooner friends for a champions league game, the Arsenal 3000 fans were in fine voice, but the S04 fans were something else. The noise from the infamous Nordekurve was amazing, as was the amount of flags, scarves and banners they had. But the roof lifted off when Schalke pegged 2 goals back to get a draw. Suddenly, all 60,00 Blue and White clad S04 fans were on there feet and screaming, especially when the PA annouced that Klaas Jan Hunterlaar! knocked one in.
See worst game, it was just shit!
Other poor grounds include
Crystal Palace (Selhurst Park), Leeds United (Elland Road) and Burnley (Turfmoor).
