Man Utd are exploring their options as the club looks to improve the experience for fans attending matches.
One of the options on the table is a complete rebuild of the stadium which would include Man Utd finding another ground to play at whilst Old Trafford is knocked down and rebuilt. The new stadium would likely be around 90,000 capacity, making it level with Wembley Stadium as the second biggest ground in Europe.
This is likely to be the clubs least preferred option as it would mean playing away from Old Trafford for a number of years. Close rivalry makes groundsharing at either the Etihad or Anfield unlikely.
Another option being explored is a rebuild of the Sir Bobby Charlton South Stand. This had previously been downplayed due to the railway line which runs behind the stand. However, improvements in building materials could now make this a viable alternative.
A rebuilt South Stand would mean reduced capacity at matches whilst the work is being undertaken. The overall capacity of Old Trafford would likely rise to over 80,000 if this option is given the green light.

Manchester United's plans to turn part of Old Trafford into safe standing have been approved by Trafford Council.
Around 1,500 seats in the North East Quadrant will now be replaced by rail seating.
The Premier League club plans to have the work completed in time for the next match with fans at Old Trafford - although it's anybody's guess when that will be.
The club have stated that if this small trial is successful, it could be extended to other areas of the stadium.
Wednesday 26th February 2020
The FA have announced Old Trafford as the venue for the opening game of next year's Women's Euro 2021.
The largest club stadium in the country joins a list of 9 others which will host the tournament in June and July next year.
The final will be held at Wembley Stadium, with the FA hoping to set a new attendance record for the competition - aiming to beat the current high of 41,301 set in Sweden in 2013.
Fans looking to attend the competition can now register their interest for tickets on the official website.
Wednesday 12th February 2020
Manchester United have requested to install 1,500 safe standing rail seats at Old Trafford.
Season ticket holders in the affected area have already been made aware of a possible trial which could take place as easily as this season.
If their application is successful, the Premier League giants will join Wolves and Spurs in offering safe standing to their fans.
The seat replacement will be on a like for like basis, meaning Old Trafford's capacity will remain the same at 74,879.
