Villarreal have moved back into their revamped El Madrigal after development work completed on schedule.
The La Liga outfit has spent the previous 6 months modernising their stadium, including building a new corner stand which now fully encloses the ground.
Instead of increasing capacity, seats in other stands have been spaced out more to give fans more room - as a result, the capacity has remained static at 22,000.
Other improvements include 2 new large screens and the replacing of all seats inside the stadium, which are now all covered by a roof.
The first match at the revamped stadium saw Villarreal beat Valencia 2-1 on New Year's Eve. Ironically, the Yellow Submarine had been playing in the nearby city of Valencia at Levante's Cuidad de Valencia whilst the modifications took place.
Saturday 14th May 2022
Villarreal have released a video and more pictures of the upcoming changes to their El Madrigal stadium.
The Spanish La Liga side will construct a new stand to fully enclose the playing field. They will also make a number of dramatic visual improvements to the outside of the stadium, to make it look more modern.
All of the seats in the stadium will be replaced and will all now be covered from the elements. Two giant 21m x 7m video scoreboards will also be installed.
Work started as soon as the Spanish season finished in May. The work is due to be completed by the time the football re-starts after the World Cup in Qatar. In order to complete within this ambitious timescale, Villarreal will have to play the first half of next season's home games at Levante's Ciudad de Valencia, some 40 miles away.
The club will spend €35m on the work. However capacity will remain at the current 22,000.
Sunday 20th February 2022
Villarreal are to invest €20m in updating their El Madrigal stadium.
The La Liga outfit become the latest club to announce stadium improvement works after the investment in the league by global investment company CVC Capital Partners.
The plans will see no increase in the current 23,500 capacity, with Villarreal instead using the money to ensure that all seats in the stadium are covered by the roof. A number of other improvements will be focused around giving fans a more comfortable experience when they attend matches.
Work is expected to start before the end of the season and be completed by the end of the year. It is expected that Villarreal will need to play away from the stadium during this period, with Levante's Ciutat de Valencia a possible option. Playing in Valencia would result in an 80-mile round trip for fans to attend home matches whilst the work is underway.
