Whilst they may not look attractive and at times run down, its the 'little' grounds which ghive you the most pleasure in visiting. I always enjoyed trips to Millmoor (Rotherham United) and Blundell Park (Grimsby Town).
It's always been a debate between myself and the hisrory books as to which was the first football match I attended. I remember it being during the 1992/93 season when Sheffield United hosted Blackburn Rovers, but they also played each other in the FA Cup as well; both were night matches which doesn't help my memory one bit. However I have concluded that it would have been the FA Cup fixture which I first attended.
For the record the Blades drew 2-2 on the night and eventually won on penalties.
As a football fan I've seen many football matches, mostly involing Sheffield United whilst I have attended other fixtures as a neutral.
As a Blade the best game I have seen would be the same which would pass through the lips of many, the infamous victory over Nottingham Forest during the 2002/03 season.
After a long hard season the Blades had finished in the top six of what was then the Nationwide League Division One (now Coca-Cola Championship) and United were drawn against Forest in the play-offs. The two sides had drawn 1-1 in the first leg at the City Ground...
...Shortly after half-time in the second leg at Bramall Lane the visitors took advantage of their 1-0 lead, already handed to them by David Johnson's first half goal with Andy Reid adding a second.
However United soon got back into the game straight from kick-off with Michael Brown slamming home a free-kick after Carl Asaba was fouled on the edge of the area and on around 75 minutes Steve Kabba made it 2-2.
In extra-time Paul Peschisolido took United into the lead for the first time and moments later Des Walker put through his own goal - at the other end Forest got a lifeline when Robert Page stabberd into his own goal; 4-3.
It was an amazing night for all United fans and one which they will never forget.
During the 1999/00 season the Blades lost 3-1 at home to Port Vale, sending United to bottom of the league - whilst it was an awful night for all it was memorable if the fact that it sounded Adrian Heath's resignation and a bright new future was ahead of them under Neil Warnock.
The Emirates (Arsenal) is noted for being the best ground in the Country and whilst I can't argue that it is spectacular there was just something that little more impressive about Eastlands - home of Manchester City.
I have only ever visited this venue once (2006/07 - City 0-0 United) but it is one ground I would visit time and time again.
For a Premier League stadium Goodison Park was deeply disappointing and iots quite clear to see why the Toffees plan to relocate.
