I've been to grounds in many different countries and experience footbal culture as widely as possible. Bilbao is very steeped in local tradition, as are many lower division grounds here in England. I was interested that the Bloomfield in Tel Aviv reminded me so much of it though.
Aston Villa 1 Manchester City 4 in the Holte End as a 9 year old! Couldn't see anything, except a bit floodlight on a damp midweek night. In those days, they were shaped as giant A and V's and for entertainment, I shut my eyes enjoying the engraved burn I had sustained by looking at them too long.
Went with my dad, we were late so I missed the first two goals. It was 1-all. At 82 minutes and 2-1 down, dad said "come on, son... let's go". When we got back to the car, we heard distant cheers... somehow, we'd had time to concede two more which I also failed to see!
England 1-2 France. Euro 2004. Bad result of course, but high drama, magnificent stadium. Extraordinary atmosphere. Zidane's added time genius. Rooney's enthusiastic teenage arrival. Henry's crucifixion by the majority England crowd.
Walsall 1-1 Reading. Bottom of the old Division 3 at Fellows Park. Puddingy pitch. Crap football. Alex Taylor of Walsall used the word, puddingy, to describe the pitch in an interview I did at the club two days before. The game was a pig's pudding.
It's just wonderful now that a few classic games have been played there. Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United springs to mind as does the drama of England Croatia, same score. I'd rank both Arsenal grounds high on my list too.
But Villa Park is like a home. It has so many memories and the beautiful stately home opposite the ground gives the area special atmospherics.
Shit ground, fire hazard, made of wood. Vinnie Jones, Keith Curle and other dogs chasing in a pack. Luckily, a Sid Cowans and David Platt-inspired Villa tonked them 2-nil to go top of the league.
