I don't know why I can't put SJP down as my favourite ground here, but nevermind. It is my home, it is my church. True, the atmosphere may not be what it was, but those moments when it comes alive, it's truly on fire. There is no place in the world where the football stadium looks out over the city like SJP. It is the focal point, the mecca. It is the place where all my dreams (and nightmares) come true.
Newcastle away to Luton in 1987. We lost 0-4 with Gazza in the team. First home game was against Charlton in 1990 with Robert Lee playing for Charlton. We lost 1-3 but my cousin Emma (a mackem) was hit on the head with the ball! My abiding memory is of watching the Gallowgate End forming human pyramids in the rain whilst their side was getting beat. I wanted to be at the top of that pyramid and I still do to this very day.
Gotta be my first away derby game at the Stadium of Shite in 2006. They were going down but they wanted to get that win against us and in the first half they outplayed us and led 1-0. But we absolutely murdered them in the 2nd half and won 4-1. Songs are still sung to this very day about "even Luque" scoring and to see their faces... especially the groundsman who threw down his corner flags and was dragged from the pitch as a few thousand Geordies sang he was "getting sacked in the morning". Brilliant. And Wor Al's last ever goal and appearance. Farewell to THE legend.
Aston Villa. Away. May 2009. The day we were relegated. Went out with a whimper. Enough said.
Purely because of the bluddy John Denver song they sing. "You Fill Up My Senses... like a greasy chip butty!" Sounds incredible everytime I hear it. Just a brilliant football song.
Absolutely fuckin' shit. Could have picked Reading. They both sum up the rising trend of out of town industrial site assembly kit stadiums. The worst thing to happen to football by a country mile. Whoever grants these little rent-a-crowd clubs permission to build their pissy grounds a million miles from the town centre and more importantly, a pub, should be dragged out into the street and shot.
