Although both the European Championships and Copa America are currently on, that doesn't mean fans can't get excited for the return of club football. Last season threw up some amazing games and fans can anticipate more great games as soon as September comes around. One of the most exciting club competitions in all of sport is the Champions League.
Last year's Champions League was full of twists and turns. Eventually, Chelsea would win their second Champions League title in nine years, despite not being the consensus pick to do so. An excellent run made them extremely deserving champions in May. However, they do have to do it all over again next season. Who wins the competition is not the only debate featured among fans. Another massive question is who will be the top scorer in the Champions League? Here are some of the potential challengers.
One of the greatest of all time, Lionel Messi is no stranger to scoring goals in the Champions League. He is the second highest all-time goalscorer in Champions League history. He has managed a whopping 120 goals in his playing career, and looks set to add onto this tally next season. Barcelona look like they could be a more settled squad than they were last season. With this in mind, if Barcelona go far, there's a good chance the Argentine could find himself top of the scoring charts, once again.
When it comes to Champions League goalscorers, there is literally no one better than Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward is the highest goalscorer in the competition's history. He has 134 goals to his name in the European competition. Although his future at Juventus is currently not entirely clear, it is very likely that he will be playing for another Champions League club. Despite being 36, Ronaldo is still in fine scoring form. He has already managed five goals in his opening three games for Portugal at Euro 2020.
It's hard to think of young superstars and not have Erling Haaland come to mind. Since his transfer to Borussia Dortmund in 2019, the Norway striker has lit the Champions League on fire. He scored 10 goals in last season's campaign, making him the top goalscorer. It's also worth a mention that his club were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the competition. He is only getting better as time goes on, meaning you can expect to see even more improvements in his game next season.
Speaking of young talents, Kylian Mbappe doesn't find too much difficulty finding the back of the net either. He managed eight goals in last season's campaign, falling short only to Erling Haaland. The French winger is a massive part of PSG's success, and is set to be for many years to come. This means you can expect to see his name on top of the scoring chart for a long time. The partnership he has formed with Neymar has been a lethal one, with the two managing a combined 14 goals as they made their way to the semi-final.
