Top 10 Largest Stadiums in the World

Top 10 Largest Stadiums in the World

Numerous football stadiums exceeded the famous 100,000 capacity before the seating spots were introduced. Fans used to watch games while standing. In such circumstances, an amazing 199,854 spectators watched the 1950 World Cup final between Brazil and Uruguay at the legendary Estadio Maracana. Today, the Maracana only has 78.838 seated spots and, unfortunately, does not even make the list of the ten largest football stadiums on the planet. Stay tuned and enjoy because you may be surprised by some venues.

10 - Salt Lake Stadium, India (85,000)

The Salt Lake Stadium was built in 1984. It welcomed 131.781 spectators in the Federation Cup semifinal back in 1997 (before the full implementation of the stadium regulations). Today, this stadium can host 85,000 fans and is home to the Indian national team as well as three clubs, including ATK Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan SC.

9 - Borg El-Arab Stadium, Egypt (86,000)

This is the second-largest stadium in Africa, as reported by John Pentin, football expert at Betting Tips 4 You. It is home to the Egyptian national team and it is located in the capital of Cairo. The stadium was built by the country's armed forces and it has a running track around it. The full capacity of the stadium was achieved on numerous occasions, including October 8th, 2017 when Mohamed Salah scored the late match-winner against Congo to send Egypt to the World Cup for the first time since 1990.

8 - Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Malaysia (87,471)

Football may not be as popular in Malaysia as it is in some other Asian countries but it did not prevent Kuala Lumpur from having one of the largest stadiums in the world. The giant complex can host 87,471 spectators. The biggest stadium in Southeastern Asia also hosted numerous other events such as the Games of the Commonwealth or the Games of Southeastern Asia.

7 - Estadio Azteca, Mexico (87,525)

We have now come to the first stadium on this list with significant football history. Estadio Azteca hosted two World Cup finals, in 1970 and 1986 respectively. It also hosted some legendary games and moments in the history of football. One such occurred just at the 1986 World Cup. Argentina and England met each other in the quarterfinal in a game in which Diego Armando Maradona scored his famous hand goal. The stadium also hosted the "Game of the Century" between Italy and West Germany at the 1970 World Cup. Italy won 4-3 after extra time. Before we move on, it is worth saying that this legendary stadium also hosted the Summer Olympic Games and the Women's World Cup.

6 - Wembley Stadium, England (90,000)

We will continue in the same fashion and stay with another legendary and historical football venue. The new Wembley Stadium was built in 2007 (the old one existed from 1923). The construction cost was around £1.4 billion. Besides hosting the Three Lions' matches, Wembley Stadium is home to the finals of many domestic competitions, including the FA Cup, League Cup, Championship playoffs, League One playoffs, and League Two playoffs. This stadium is unique for its ability to host 90,000 spectators under the roof. The new Wembley has already hosted the UEFA Champions League final and the EURO 2020 final.

5 - Rose Bowl Stadium, United States (92,542)

The United States are home to plenty of large and impressive stadiums for the NFL. However, they did invest in improving the structure of soccer venues as well. One particularly stands out and it is the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. We all remember it for hosting the 1994 World Cup final between Italy and Brazil (the famous penalties).

4 - FNB Stadium, South Africa (94,736)

FNB Stadium is the largest football venue in Africa. This impressive stadium was used for many purposes in the past but we will all remember it for hosting the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands (you must recall Andres Iniesta's late extra-time winner for La Furia Roja). Today, the stadium is home to the South African national team and the local football club Kaizer City Chiefs.

3 - Camp Nou, Spain (99,354)

The home of legendary FC Barcelona is the largest football stadium in Europe with a 99,354 capacity. Camp Nou hosted pretty much any major final throughout history, including the UEFA Champions League, World Cup, Olympic Games, etc. Barcelona have announced the new expansion projects as of 2024, planning to increase the capacity of the stadium for 10,500 seats.

2 - Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia (100,024)

This venue is used for hosting both cricket and football games. The Olympic Games, World Cup qualifiers, and Aussie Rules rugby are only some of the events that took place at this stadium. The place has been renovated on multiple occasions in the past, most recently in 2006 when its capacity exceeded 100,000. The greatest attendance ever at the famous MCG came in the Olympic Games final between the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia back in 1956.

1 - Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, North Korea (114,000)

Yes, you have read right. The largest football stadium on the planet is located in Pyongyang, North Korea. It was built back in 1989 and has been the home to most matches of the North Korean national team. However, since football is by no means the most popular sport in this country, the stadium hosted numerous other events like wrestling matches or musical concerts.
