The best festive fixtures from the Premier League this season

The best festive fixtures from the Premier League this season

The festive period in the Premier League is a time like no other, with teams pushed to their limits by a relentless schedule that tests squad depth and mental resilience.

It's a time where anyone can beat anyone, and that's often reflected when making a bet on Premier League games during your time off.

Matches come thick and fast, leaving little room for rest or error. The intensity often leads to unexpected results and unforgettable drama. It's a period where title challenges are strengthened or faltered, and relegation battles take unexpected twists.

Over the years, some of the most iconic Premier League moments have occurred during the festive period. From Chelsea's 2007 comeback against Aston Villa to Liverpool's dominance over Leicester City, which all but secured their first league title in 30 years, Christmas wishes come through at both ends of the table.

In this article, we look back at some of the highlights from this year's Premier League Christmas crackers and review the best games as we head into 2025.

Liverpool 6–3 Tottenham Hotspur

Liverpool delivered a statement victory just before Christmas, dismantling Ange Postecoglou's rebellious Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 at Anfield to go four points clear at the top of the table.

The Reds were relentless, with Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister scoring headers to put them 2-0 up before the half-hour mark.

Although James Maddison pulled one back for Spurs before half-time, Liverpool restored their dominance with Dominik Szoboszlai finishing off a slick move in first-half stoppage time. Spurs wouldn't stop attacking and left themselves susceptible to the red arrows thrashing blows.

Mohamed Salah added a brace in the second half, breaking club records as he became Liverpool's fourth all-time top scorer.

Despite late goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke giving Spurs a glimmer of hope, Diaz rounded off the scoring with his second to cap off a commanding performance from Arne Slot's side.

Aston Villa 2–2 Brighton

Aston Villa and Brighton played out an entertaining draw showcasing both sides' grit and quality. Ollie Watkins celebrated his birthday in style, scoring a penalty to level the game after Simon Adingra had given Brighton an early lead with a curling effort.

Watkins was instrumental in Villa's second, setting up Morgan Rogers with a delightful chipped pass just after the interval. The former Manchester City academy player has enjoyed a breakout season and was pivotal throughout Christmas as he scored against his former team while also contributing here at Villa Park.

However, Brighton fought back and found an equaliser through Tariq Lamptey, whose driven finish past Emiliano Martinez secured a hard-earned point. While Villa were left ruing missed chances to move closer to the top five, Brighton showed resilience to end their winless streak in an exciting festive clash.

Ipswich Town 2–0 Chelsea

Ipswich Town produced a remarkable performance to claim their first home win of the season, defeating Chelsea 2-0 in a game that highlighted the unpredictability of the Premier League.

Liam Delap stole the show, winning and converting an early penalty before setting up Omari Hutchinson for Ipswich's second goal in the second half.

Chelsea dominated possession but were wasteful in front of goal, with Joao Felix seeing an equaliser ruled out by VAR for offside.

Enzo Maresca's side, who had been on a strong run of form – perhaps even earning the plaudits of being potential title contenders - suffered a second consecutive defeat, denting their title hopes. Meanwhile, Ipswich climbed out of the bottom three with a spirited display that underscored their fight for survival.
