The English Premier League has been the richest and most attractive football league in Europe for several seasons now. For football fans in the UK, the sport is far more than just a game-it's a way of life. From young children to older adults, football conversations are everywhere, no matter a person's age, gender, or background. What are the characteristics of football competitions in the EPL? What is worth knowing? Who has won the title the most often? Find out about all this in the article from OC24 Limited sports betting experts.

A brief history of the EPL competition

The English Premier League, often called the Premiership, is currently the most popular national football league globally. Only the UEFA Champions League rivals it in terms of international prestige and competition.

Football in England dates back to 1857 with the founding of the Football Association, but it wasn't until 1888 that the first official football competition, known as the Football League, began. The league's inaugural season featured 12 teams, with Preston North End emerging as the first national champions.

The competition continued with interruptions during World War I and World War II. However, the real turning point came in 1992 when the richest 20 clubs in England broke away from the Football League and formed the Premier League. This marked the beginning of a new era in English football, one that would go on to shape the European football scene for decades.

What are the rules of the English Premier League?

Of course, the goal of every team in the British Isles is to win the Premier League, and the football teams in the English top league are fighting for it. The second division there is called the Championship, while the third division is called League One. The level of all these competitions is extremely even, but we are most interested in the schedule and rules of competition in the 1st division, i.e., the EPL (English Premier League).

What are the rules for the 2024/25 season? The competition rules have remained unchanged since 1992. 20 teams start the new season in the top division. Each team plays each opponent twice (once at home and once away), which means that 38 games have to be played in a season.

A win is rewarded with 3 points, a draw earns a team 1 point, and a defeat is, of course, worth 0 points. The best team at the end of the season wins the English championship, the teams ranked 1-4 advance to the group stage of the Champions League, the 5th team plays in the Europa League, and the 3 worst teams are relegated to the Championship (second league level).

Who will win the English league in 2024/2025?

In the 2023/24 season, Man City were on top (Pep Guardiola's team finished the 23/24 season with a mere 2-point lead over Arsenal). The 2022/23 season also went to 'The Citizens', while the 2021/22 season was won by... Man City, and the same happened the year before!!! In general, the popular 'Citizens' have dominated the competition in England over the past decade, but what will happen this season?

As of April 2025, Manchester City is still in the lead for the 2024/25 Premier League title, but Arsenal and Liverpool are close behind. City are aiming for a fifth consecutive title, but Arsenal's consistent form and Liverpool's recent improvement have made the race more exciting than in recent seasons.

According to bookmakers, City remain the favorites, with Arsenal and Liverpool also in strong contention. The title race is far from decided, and with only a few weeks left, it's shaping up to be one of the closest in years.

Conclusion

The EPL is already in full swing, with the 2024/25 season running from August to May. Fans are eagerly awaiting the final weeks in May to see who will be crowned champion. The competition remains exciting, and betting on the league has become more popular than ever, as fans around the world follow every twist and turn of the season.
