Biggest Football Stadiums in the World

Biggest Football Stadiums in the World

Football was first introduced to the world in the mid-1800s. By the 20th century, the sport had already become unparalleled in popularity. Today, 3 billion fans around the globe follow their favorite clubs and their national teams. With so many fans, we understandably need larger and larger stadiums. So, in this article, we are going to take a look at a few of the biggest football stadiums around the world.

Camp Nou, Spain

Barcelona is, without a doubt, one of the most successful clubs in Spain, and the world. Their fans are legion, and they gather from all over the world to watch Barca's home matches. In many of today's soccer games, Barcelona's fans flood the stadiums, so at least when they are playing home games, the team needs a large place to seat their numerous supporters. And that's where Camp Nou comes in.

Situated in Barcelona, Camp Nou is one of the biggest association football stadiums in the world. With a seating capacity close to 100,000, the structure is built to house as many of Barcelona's fans as it is possible. However, it doesn't end there. Plans are underway to expand the stadium by 2026. Meaning, in three years Camp Nou might just be the biggest football stadium in the entire world.

Wembley Stadium, England

While debate about where football started rages on, one thing is certain: the modern iteration can be traced back to Victorian England. So, understandably the epicenter of football is also the home of one of the biggest football stadiums in the world. The Wembley Stadium in London is the stomping ground of the Three Lions, England's national team. It also houses Tottenham Hotspur, one of the 20 teams that compete in the English Premier League.

Wembley first opened in 2007, 15 years ago. In essence, it is a multi-purpose stadium. While it's primary use is soccer, Wembley has seen its fair share of rugby matches, boxing matches, American football games, and even concerts. With a capacity of 90,000, it is one of the biggest stadiums in the world.

Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, North Korea

Many might be surprised to learn that the biggest football stadium was built in 1989, and can be seen on Rungra Island in North Korea. The Rungrado is home to the North Korean men and women national football team, as well as the April 25 Sports Club. While primarily used for football, the stadium is also built to support athletics and gymnastic performances.

In 2023, Rungrado remains the largest football stadium in the world with a capacity of 114,000. It is also the second largest sports stadium in the world, only exceeded by the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahedabad, India, the primary use of which is to house cricket games.

FNB Stadium, South Africa

From North Korea we go to South Africa, in order to visit the FNB Stadium. The FNB is the largest stadium in Africa, and the third largest soccer stadium in the world. Built in Johannesburg, in 1989, the FNB has been renovated several times, and can now hold over 94,000 visitors.

The stadium is home to the South African national football team, as well as the Kaizer Chiefs, one of South Africa's most successful football clubs. The FNB can also be repurposed for Rugby matches and is the home field of the South African rugby union team.
