Football Ground Map is the brain child of web developer and Sheffield United supporter Rob Clarkson, who was looking for a way to document how many different grounds he'd been to whilst watching his beloved Blades. After searching the Internet, Rob found nothing and set about building a ground mapping tool for himself.
The site was completed in under a month and was launched in November 2007 as a Facebook application. At first the app contained only the 92 English league grounds, but as it gained in popularity more and more grounds from England were added and soon requests for new grounds were coming in from all over the world. As the application grew, Rob and designer Phil Baker decided to create a stand-alone website and so footballgroundmap.com was born.
The main footballgroundmap.com website was launched in September 2009 with the hope of attracting an even wider audience than the Facebook application.
The website and Facebook application have a total of 175,558 users. There are currently 32,374 grounds on the system from 35,981 different teams from 2,297 leagues in 238 countries around the world.
Rob is the owner of Football Ground Map and has been a season ticket holder at Bramall Lane since he was 8.
Married with 2 kids, Rob goes to matches with his wife and dad and is a contributor to the Sheffield United matchday programme.
This website has made him become somewhat obsessed with football stadiums all around the world and he's always looking for the nearest one to visit - even when there's no game on!
Recently Rob has been getting more into non league football as he becomes more disenchanted by the Premier League, ticket prices, silly transfer fees and annoying kick-off times..
